Rise from the Island
Part I: Old Mistakes
Chapter 3: Challenger

"Meta Naito Kyou!" spluttered Dakonyo, terrified.

Fumu, Bun, and Kirby knew that the last thing Dakonyo would ever want to do was offend Meta Knight. They had learned during their stay on his island that he honored the knight almost religiously, saluting to even a knife bearing Meta Knight's image and calling him absurdly "his lordship." And now Meta Knight was glaring down at the frightened Galaxy Soldier, thinking that some grave offense had been committed against his double.

"Meta Naito Kyou, sir," gasped Dakonyo, falling to his knees before the older man. "I am so sorry, Your Lordship, I didn't know…I mean, I'd always heard that you didn't have a…I would never try to insult your double…"

Meta Knight's hackles seemed to descend, and he looked over his shoulder, where Chuva stood smirking. "Chuva!" he cried. "What did you do to this poor man?"

"Nothing!" she insisted.

"Nothing? You've scared him half to death! I don't even KNOW him! He certainly doesn't want to challenge our relationship!"

"He kissed my hand!" declared Chuva indignantly.

"Kissed your HAND? Is that all? Honestly, Chuva, you made it sound like he tried to rape you or something!" Meta Knight looked down and extended a hand to Dakonyo. "I apologize for this, sir. I'm afraid my double can be a bit of a drama queen sometimes…"

Dakonyo stared at the hand offered to him as if it had descended from god. "You…you are not angry with me?" he said incredulously.

"Of course not," Meta Knight assured him. "You meant nothing by it."

The old Galaxy Soldier tentatively took the knight's hand and pulled himself to his bare feet.

"Thank you, sir!" he declared, saluting. "You are truly as just and fair as you have always been made out to be, Meta Naito Kyou."

Meta Knight, looking more uncomfortable than flattered by all the attention, tucked his cape around himself. "I'm afraid you have the advantage," he replied. "You know my name, but I've never seen you before."

"I'd expect not, sir." Dakonyo saluted again. "Sergeant Dakonyo, Galaxy Soldier, at your service!"

"Galaxy Soldier?" repeated Meta Knight. "This is certainly a surprise. I'd heard they'd all been killed, or decided to forget the war and become normal people." His very unsurprised tone contrasted his words.

"And I had heard that you did not have a double," responded Dakonyo. "So we've both learned something new today."

Meta Knight half-chuckled. "Yes, I suppose so."

"Oh, well isn't this NICE," snorted Chuva. "I'm so glad you've made a new friend with this old guy who tried to hook up with me, Meta. Have you forgotten Galaxy Soldier Army policy?! You're supposed to be challenging him to a duel!"

He scowled behind his mask as he turned to face his double. "No, Chuva. This is just a misunderstanding. I'm not going to challenge him."

Chuva swore loudly. "THANK YOU, darling double," she spat. "You never miss a chance to let me down. Thanks a LOT."

"Ignore her," said Meta Knight, pulling Dakonyo aside. "She's been in a bad mood today."

"I'm confused," admitted Dakonyo. "You were infamous in the Galaxy Soldier Army, sir…infamous for not having a double. So, this woman…?"

"It's a long story," replied Meta Knight, and said no more.

Dakonyo understood. "One that you are not inclined to share?"

Meta Knight remained silent.

Meanwhile, Fumu, Bun, and Kirby were unable to understand why Chuva wasn't warming up to their old friend. Chuva had forgiven Nexgens for attacking her and her double and become firm friends with them. She'd joked around with opponents only hours after battles had ended. And yet she was so angry at Dakonyo, simply because he'd tried to give her a compliment. All of it was very un-Chuva-like.

"Chuva-san?" asked Bun hesitantly. "What's wrong?"

Chuva closed her eyes and shook her head. "I won't be able to call myself a lady knight unless I do this properly!" she muttered to herself, then stepped forward.

"Hey, old man!" she shouted angrily, placing her hands on her hips.

Dakonyo turned to her, surprised.

"I don't care if my double thinks this is a misunderstanding," she yelled. "No matter your intentions, you have compromised my honor! And I intend to get it back."

Fumu's mouth pursed in confusion. Behind her, a quiet voice said, "Uh-oh."

She swiveled her head. "Meta Naito Kyou!" she gasped. "What's wrong?"

"I should have known this would happen…" Meta Knight shook his masked head. "I'm afraid Dakonyo-san will have to fight a duel today after all."

"But you said no!" declared Bun. "Isn't that the end of it?"

"I wish it was, but no," admitted Meta Knight. "According to Galaxy Soldier Army policy, if a male Galaxy Soldier bestows a gesture of affection upon a female Star Warrior, he will be challenged to a duel by her double on her behalf. However…"

"However?" Fumu prompted.

"If for any reason her double is unable or unwilling to fight, the woman may then challenge the offender herself!" completed the knight.

"Oh, no!" cried Fumu and Bun at once.

"Lady Chuva Knight, I certainly did not intend to insult your honor," said Dakonyo nervously. "If there's anything I can do…"

"You can fight me like a man, and not a coward!" Chuva snapped. She lifted one graceful gloved hand and jabbed a finger at him, saying the words that everyone else had been dreading:

"I challenge you to a duel!"
Hey, look, another chapter! Isn't that amazing? It would also be amazing if the ten people who said they were Season 1.5 fans would comment on it!
